# OpenComputer vs Devin

Devin is Cognition's autonomous coding agent: each session runs in its own VM booted from a snapshot of your repositories and tooling, started from the web app, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Linear, Jira, the API, a CLI or Devin Desktop, and it opens pull requests with recordings of its own testing. OpenComputer runs Claude Code and Codex on a cloud Linux machine per Slack workspace, driven from a shared Slack thread or an API, and billed per Slack workspace for work minutes.

The biggest difference is the agent. Devin is its own agent with its own models and modes, inside a broad platform that includes an IDE. OpenComputer has no agent of its own: it runs Claude Code or Codex, can use the Claude or ChatGPT subscription you already pay for, and keeps the work in a Slack thread the whole team can see and steer.

If you want one platform for autonomous coding across Linux, macOS and Windows, with many integrations, Devin fits. If your team wants Claude Code or Codex in Slack, turning requests into pull requests, OpenComputer fits.

## What is Devin?

Devin runs each session in [a Linux-based virtual machine with your repositories cloned, tools installed and dependencies resolved](https://docs.devin.ai/onboard-devin/environment). You describe the environment in a blueprint, which is built into a snapshot, and every session boots from that snapshot. You can also ask Devin to set the environment up and approve what it proposes. [macOS VMs](https://docs.devin.ai/onboard-devin/environment/macos-support) with Xcode and the iOS Simulator are available, and Windows VMs on a limited basis.

You start sessions from the web app, `@Devin` in Slack or Microsoft Teams, Linear, Jira, the API, Automations, or locally in the Devin CLI or Devin Desktop with a handoff to the cloud. Devin commits to GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket or Azure DevOps, can QA its own pull request with computer use and send a screen recording, and can run [several managed Devins in parallel](https://docs.devin.ai/work-with-devin/advanced-capabilities), each in its own VM. You can [SSH into a session](https://docs.devin.ai/cli/ssh) and forward ports.

## What is OpenComputer?

OpenComputer runs Claude Code and Codex in its own cloud, and you hand them work by mentioning @Computer in a Slack thread or calling the API from your code. Each Slack workspace gets its own cloud Linux machine, sized to its plan. Every thread works in its own copy of the repos on its own branch, so parallel requests don't collide. Workspaces resume warm, with the repository, dependencies and build caches already in place.

@Computer reads the code, runs the commands and tests, then opens a pull request that says what changed, why, and how it was checked, with a link back to the thread. UI changes come with a screenshot and a preview link. It is built for small changes that follow existing patterns and stay in scope, and it reviews its own diff before handing it over.

## Key differences

### Devin's agent or Claude Code and Codex

Devin is a complete agent from Cognition, with its own cloud modes and models: the pricing page lists [frontier models from OpenAI, Claude, Gemini and SpaceXAI](https://devin.ai/pricing) alongside Cognition's SWE models. OpenComputer does not build an agent. It runs the [Claude Code](/compare/opencomputer-vs-claude-code) and [Codex](/compare/opencomputer-vs-codex) harnesses themselves, so the agent behaves as it does in your terminal, and you choose per request.

### Breadth of platform or a focused Slack agent

Devin covers a lot of ground: Linux, macOS and Windows VMs, Android emulators, an IDE in Devin Desktop, Slack, Teams, Linear, Jira and PagerDuty, many git hosts, Terraform, and parallel managed sessions for large migrations. Enterprise customers can run workloads in their own environment. OpenComputer is narrower: Slack plus the API, one Linux machine per workspace, and pull requests. In return, the Slack thread is the unit of work: everyone in it sees every file @Computer opens and every command it runs, anyone can steer it, and conventions one person explains apply to later requests. If you need macOS builds or Windows, Devin is the better fit.

### Getting into the machine

Devin lets you SSH into a session, copy files, attach an editor over remote SSH, forward ports and take over the desktop. OpenComputer does not list shell access to @Computer's sessions; instead it shows every file it opens and every command it runs in the Slack thread. For direct, programmatic control of persistent VMs, OpenComputer offers a separate Sandbox SDK.

### Models and billing

Devin plans meter [agent actions plus VM time](https://docs.devin.ai/admin/billing/usage) against a quota, and sleeping sessions use nothing. You can [link a ChatGPT subscription](https://docs.devin.ai/admin/billing/chatgpt) to pay for GPT usage on Pro, Max and Teams, though machine time and other models still use Devin quota. OpenComputer can use your Claude or ChatGPT subscription for the model at $0, your own API key, or its own tokens at API prices with no markup, and bills work minutes separately.

## Pricing compared

As of October 2026, Devin lists [Pro at $20 a month and Max at $200 a month](https://devin.ai/pricing), with Teams from $80 a month, where a full seat is $40 a month and flex seats draw on shared credits. Usage above quota comes from [prepaid on-demand credits charged at API pricing](https://docs.devin.ai/admin/billing/self-serve). Enterprise is custom. OpenComputer lists Pro at $20 a month with 2,000 work minutes and Max at $200 with 25,000, for the whole Slack workspace, with $0.01 per extra minute.

For one developer, Devin Pro is $20 a month and includes frontier models within its daily and weekly quota. OpenComputer Pro is also $20 a month, covering about 33 hours of active agent work, plus the model: $0 extra with a Claude or ChatGPT subscription you already have, or your own key or OpenComputer tokens at API prices. The units differ: Devin meters actions and VM time against a quota, while OpenComputer meters the minutes the agent spends working, for everyone in the workspace.

## When to choose Devin

- You need macOS, Windows or Android environments, not only Linux.
- You want one platform that also includes an IDE, code review, on-call and many integrations.
- You want SSH and port forwarding into the agent's machine, or a desktop you can take over.
- You plan large migrations with many managed sessions running in parallel, each in its own VM.

## When to choose OpenComputer

- You want Claude Code or Codex specifically, using a Claude or ChatGPT subscription you already pay for.
- Your team works in Slack and wants one shared thread where anyone can see and steer the agent.
- You want small, in-scope pull requests with what changed, why and how it was checked.
- You want one plan for the whole Slack workspace, and the option to build your own [serverless agents](/agents) on the same cloud.

## FAQ

### Is OpenComputer a Devin alternative?

Yes, for teams that want an agent in Slack that works on a cloud machine and opens pull requests. Devin is Cognition's own agent on a broad platform. OpenComputer runs Claude Code and Codex instead, and centers the work in a shared Slack thread.

### How much does Devin cost?

As of October 2026, Devin has a Free plan, Pro at $20 a month, Max at $200 a month and Teams from $80 a month, with Enterprise priced custom. Usage beyond the plan quota comes from prepaid credits charged at API pricing.

### Devin vs Claude Code: what is the difference?

Devin is Cognition's own agent, running in a cloud VM per session. Claude Code is Anthropic's agent, which you can run in your terminal or in a cloud VM. OpenComputer is one way to run Claude Code and Codex in the cloud from Slack.

### Can I use my ChatGPT or Claude subscription?

Devin lets you link a ChatGPT subscription to pay for GPT usage on Pro, Max and Teams, while machine time and other models still use Devin quota. OpenComputer accepts your Claude or ChatGPT subscription, so you pay $0 to OpenComputer for the model.

### Does Devin run on macOS or Windows?

Yes. Linux is the default, macOS VMs with Xcode and the iOS Simulator are available, and Windows VMs are available on a limited basis. OpenComputer runs on one Linux machine per Slack workspace.
