# Devin vs Claude Code

Devin is Cognition's autonomous coding agent: each session runs in its own cloud VM booted from a snapshot of your repositories, and you hand it work from a web app, Slack, Teams, Linear, Jira or an API. Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool, used from the terminal, IDE extensions and a desktop app, with a cloud agent, Claude Code on the web, that runs sessions on Anthropic-managed VMs. Both are cloud coding agents that open pull requests.

The biggest difference is how much of the workflow each one owns. Devin is built as a teammate you delegate to: it has Linux, macOS and Windows VMs, records itself testing its own PRs, and plugs into many team tools. Claude Code is built as an agent you work with directly, in your terminal first, with cloud sessions included in a Claude plan.

If your team wants to assign tickets to an agent across many tools and platforms, Devin is designed for that. If you want Claude models and an agent that moves between your terminal and the cloud, Claude Code fits. Both start at $20 a month.

## What is Devin?

Devin is Cognition's autonomous coding agent. Each session runs in [a Linux-based virtual machine with your repositories cloned, tools installed, dependencies resolved](https://docs.devin.ai/onboard-devin/environment), booted from an org snapshot built from a declarative blueprint. macOS VMs with Xcode and the iOS Simulator are available, Windows VMs on a limited basis, and Android emulators are supported. You can ask Devin to set up the environment for a repository and approve what it proposes.

You start sessions from the web app, `@Devin` in Slack or Microsoft Teams, Linear, Jira, the API or Automations, or locally in the Devin CLI or Devin Desktop, the next generation of Windsurf, and hand off to the cloud. Devin opens PRs on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket or Azure DevOps, can QA its own PR with computer use and send a screen recording, and can run [managed Devins in parallel](https://docs.devin.ai/work-with-devin/advanced-capabilities), each in its own VM. You can [SSH into a session](https://docs.devin.ai/cli/ssh) and forward ports.

## What is Claude Code?

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. It reads your codebase, edits files and runs commands, and it is [available in your terminal, IDE, desktop app and browser](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/overview), with extensions for VS Code and JetBrains.

Claude Code on the web is the cloud agent. Each session runs [in an isolated, Anthropic-managed VM](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/claude-code-on-the-web), started from claude.ai/code, the Claude apps, `claude --cloud` in the terminal, Slack or scheduled tasks. Claude pushes changes to a branch, you review the diff and create the PR, and Auto-fix can keep pushing fixes for CI failures and review comments. `--teleport` pulls a cloud session into your terminal.

## Key differences

### Delegated teammate or hands-on agent

Devin is designed for handing off whole tasks: you assign a ticket in Linear or Jira or mention it in Slack, and it comes back with a PR and a recording of its own testing. A coordinator session can split a large job across managed Devins. Claude Code is designed for working alongside you, mostly in the terminal, with cloud sessions for work you want to keep running after you close the laptop. It can also split work with subagents, and Projects coordinate many parallel cloud sessions.

### Platforms and machine access

Devin offers Linux, macOS and Windows VMs, so it can build iOS apps in Xcode or test on Windows. You can [SSH into a running session](https://docs.devin.ai/cli/ssh), use your editor over remote SSH, forward ports, and take over its desktop. Claude Code cloud sessions run on [Ubuntu 24.04 with 4 vCPUs, 16 GB of RAM and 30 GB of disk](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/cloud-environments), with Docker, PostgreSQL and Redis preinstalled, and you don't get a shell: Claude runs every command for you.

### Models

Devin's [pricing page](https://devin.ai/pricing) lists frontier models from OpenAI, Claude, Gemini and SpaceXAI, plus Cognition's own SWE models, with SWE-2 free on paid plans. On Pro, Max and Teams you can [link a ChatGPT subscription](https://docs.devin.ai/admin/billing/chatgpt) to pay for GPT usage, though machine time still uses Devin quota. Claude Code runs Claude models only, and its cloud sessions [require a claude.ai subscription sign-in](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/claude-code-on-the-web).

### Integrations and git hosts

Devin connects to Slack, Teams, Linear, Jira, PagerDuty and more, and works with GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps. Claude Code on the web needs GitHub to clone repositories and create PRs, with a one-way bundle upload for other hosts. Its Slack app is for Pro and Max, and Team and Enterprise workspaces use Claude Tag.

## Pricing compared

As of October 2026, [Devin Pro is $20 a month](https://devin.ai/pricing) with a daily and weekly quota shared across Devin Cloud, the CLI and Desktop, and Max is $200 a month with a weekly quota and no daily cap. Teams starts at $80 a month, with full seats at $40 a month and free flex seats that draw on shared credits. [Usage counts agent actions plus VM time](https://docs.devin.ai/admin/billing/usage), and sleeping sessions use nothing. Devin Cloud is not listed on the Free plan. Claude Code on the web is included in [Claude Pro at $20 a month](https://claude.com/pricing) billed monthly ($17 billed annually), Max from $100 a month, and Team standard seats at $25 per seat per month billed monthly, with no separate VM charge.

For one developer, both start at $20 a month. Above that, Claude Max starts at $100 a month and Devin Max is $200. The plans meter differently, Devin by quota for actions and machine time and Claude by usage limits, so the cheaper option depends on how much work you hand off.

## When to choose Devin

- You want to delegate tickets from Linear, Jira, Slack or Teams and get PRs back with recorded QA.
- You need macOS or Windows VMs, or Android emulators.
- You want SSH, port forwarding or desktop takeover in a running session.
- Your code is on GitLab, Bitbucket or Azure DevOps, or you want models from several vendors.

## When to choose Claude Code

- You want to work with the agent directly in your terminal or IDE, and send work to the cloud when it suits you.
- You prefer Claude models and already pay for a Claude plan.
- You want `--cloud` and `--teleport` to move sessions between laptop and cloud.
- You want a cheaper step up: Claude Max starts at $100 a month.

## Run Claude Code from Slack

[OpenComputer](/) runs Claude Code, and Codex, in its cloud: your team mentions @Computer in a Slack thread, everyone can see and steer the work, and it opens a pull request. It does not run Devin. It can sign in with your existing Claude subscription, and each Slack workspace gets one cloud Linux machine where every thread works on its own branch. See [OpenComputer vs Devin](/compare/opencomputer-vs-devin) and [OpenComputer vs Claude Code on the web](/compare/opencomputer-vs-claude-code).

## FAQ

### Is Devin or Claude Code better?

They suit different ways of working. Devin is better for delegating whole tickets across many team tools and platforms, including macOS and Windows. Claude Code is better if you want to work with the agent yourself in the terminal, on Claude models, with cloud sessions included in your plan.

### Can Devin use Claude models?

Yes. Devin's pricing page lists frontier models from Claude alongside OpenAI, Gemini and SpaceXAI, plus Cognition's own SWE models. That is Devin's agent using Claude models, not Claude Code.

### How much do Devin and Claude Code cost?

As of October 2026, Devin Pro and Claude Pro are both $20 a month. Devin Max is $200 a month and Teams starts at $80 a month. Claude Max starts at $100 a month and Claude Team standard seats are $25 per seat billed monthly.

### Do Devin and Claude Code run in the cloud?

Both do. Devin runs every cloud session in its own VM from your org's snapshot, and the Devin CLI and Desktop can start locally and hand off to the cloud. Claude Code runs locally by default, and Claude Code on the web runs each session on an Anthropic-managed VM.
